PETOSKEY STONE JEWELRY

Petoskey Stone

Hexagonaria Percarinata Fossil

Michigan’s State Stone

The name ‘Petoskey’ comes from Pet-O-Saga, which means “Rays of the Rising Sun” in the Ottawa language. This was the birth name given in 1787 to the son of a French fur trader and his Native American wife. Pet-O-Saga became a respected landowner, businessman, and Ottawa Indian Chief. In 1873, the settlement on the Bear River was named Petoskey in his honor.  These unusual fossils were -and continue to be - popular souvenirs. They were given the name Petoskey for the “Rays” in the hexagonal coral pattern of the stone.
